Elizabeth Gilbert is separating from her husband, Jose Nunes—or, as he may be better known to fans of her book Eat Pray Love, Felipe. That's the name she gave him in the book, which is about a journey she set out on after her first marriage collapsed, the Hollywood Reporter notes. She and "Felipe" fell in love in Bali, a romance documented in the book and its accompanying movie (in which he was played by Javier Bardem). "Because I have shared details of my private life with you all so intimately over the years, I feel the need to share with you this recent change in my personal life," Gilbert wrote on Facebook Friday in announcing the separation from "my dear companion for over 12 years."

She says the split is both amicable and personal. "At this time of transition, I hope you will respect our privacy. In my heart, I know that you will do so, because I trust that you understand how this is a story that I am living—not a story that I am telling." In a Facebook comment, Momastery founder/Gilbert's friend Glennon Doyle Melton writes, "I did not know if I’d ever see anything as beautiful and love drenched as the coming together of you and your dear Jose. Until I witnessed the coming apart of you and Jose. ... Your marriage is the most successful I've ever known." (More Elizabeth Gilbert stories.)
