The Standard & Poor's 500 index closed at a record high, beating the mark it set last year, the AP reports. It's been more than a year since the benchmark index hit a record high. Its gain on Monday was enough to beat the peak it set in May of last year. The Dow Jones industrial average is just shy of its own record reached in that same month, but the Nasdaq composite index would need to rise 5% to regain the peak it reached last July. The Dow gained 80 points, or 0.4%, to 18,226. The S&P 500 added 7 points, or 0.3%, to 2,137. The Nasdaq rose 31 points, or 0.6%, to 4,988. (More stock market stories.)
