Hillary may take Spitzer's old job if race remains close, insiders say

(Newser) – Hillary Clinton could soon be chief executive… of New York. With Clinton’s presidential chances looking slim, party insiders are floating the idea of a gubernatorial run, Newsweek reports. And David Paterson may not stay governor for long in Clinton’s state; Eliot Spitzer’s scandal-plagued successor may even need to resign soon and spark a November election.

Hillary’s opponent, ironically, could be Rudy Giuliani, who is reportedly mulling a run for governor. Clinton is apparently open to the idea, while Bill Clinton rejects it out of hand. One campaign aide summed up the nay side: “Hillary believes, and so do I, that she'll be president this year,” he said. “It may be an alternative universe, but it's the one they (the Clintons) live in.”

He thinks the victims—more than a dozen teenagers have started displaying serious facial tics and twitching—could be unconsciously mimicking each other after seeing videos on Facebook and YouTube, reports WKBW of Buffalo. Cemetery Worker Breaks Legs Tumbling Into Grave

Middle Village cemetery was site of surprising fall

(NEWSER) - Mourners at a funeral in New York were shocked to see a cemetery worker plunge into a grave today and break both his legs, DNAinfo reports. The 49-year-old "was removing the strap from the casket at that time," says a cemetery official who suspected the man only hurt a knee. But the FDNY says that the worker, who was taken to hospital, broke both legs in the fall. Calif., NY May Sign On to Robo-Signing Settlement

Obama administration nearing deal for mortgage relief

(NEWSER) - California and New York are close to signing on to the Obama administration's multibillion dollar mortgage robo-signing settlement, significantly expanding the deal, the New York Times reports. If California signs on, the settlement total will jump from $19 billion to $25 billion. In exchange, the states want measures to help individual homeowners, and the ability to investigate the banks' other past mortgage misdeeds. California also wants to ensure that big pension funds can still sue the banks for false claims about mortgage-backed securities. More»

Clinton: UN Must Send 'Clear Message' to Syria

She rejects comparisons to Libya as 'false analogy'

(AP) - Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton told the Security Council today that UN action to end the violence in Syria would be different from the NATO-led efforts in Libya that resulted in the ouster of Moammar Gadhafi. "I know that some members here may be concerned that the Security Council is headed toward another Libya," she said. "That is a false analogy." Her remarks were apparently directed at Russia, which says it worries that a draft measure aimed at Syria, currently before the council, could lead to military action and regime change. More»
