17 Best Peace-Loving War Films

Posted Apr 2, 08 11:41 AM CDT in Arts & Living

(Newser)Stop-Loss is hardly the first blockbuster to take a hard line on war. Entertainment Weekly lists 17 of the best anti-war films of all time.

  1. All Quiet on the Western Front (1930): One of the earliest anti-war films follows naïve German troops into battle in WWI.
  2. Paths of Glory (1957): Kirk Douglas stars as a WWI colonel in Stanley Kubrick’s first box office hit.

  1. M*A*S*H (1970): Robert Altman’s dark comedy about the Korean War draws parallels with Vietnam.
  2. Das Boot (1981): Set inside a WWII U-boat, the German film depicted the reality of undersea warfare.
  3. Platoon (1986): In Oliver Stone's highly autobiographical film, Charlie Sheen drops out, tunes in to Vietnam, isn't turned on.
  4. Three Kings (1999): This gold heist film is set in the aftermath of the Gulf War...the first time around.
