Aides explain much of it as paperwork matter

Hillary Clinton had $8.7 million in debt at the end of February, including roughly $300,000 in unpaid health insurance invoices for her staff and $3,100 from her own high school alma mater, where she held a campaign event. Barack Obama notched only $625,058 in debt, reports the Chicago Tribune, leading the former first lady to issue a new plea yesterday for donations.

Aides explained away much of the debt as the product of paperwork crunch and timing irregularities. In an Internet video released yesterday, Clinton acknowledged her financial hardships: “I am being outspent 2-1, 3-1, 4-1, even 5-1, so I need your help now more than ever.” Indeed, Obama has spent about three times as much as Clinton in Pennsylvania—averaging $150,000 per day to her $50,000.
