New CNN/ORC polls released Monday have Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump practically in a dead heat in two battleground states, with just one point separating the two, CNN reports. In Colorado, Trump is the one in the lead, nabbing 42% of likely voters to Clinton's 41% (Libertarian Gary Johnson takes 13%, the Green Party's Jill Stein 3%). And in Pennsylvania, Clinton squeaks by with 45% to Trump's 44%, with Johnson grabbing 6% and Stein holding steady at 3%. With the 3.5-point error margin for each state, that leaves the two major-party candidates in a breathlessly close race in those swing states on the day of their first big debate on Long Island.
And the debate could prove to have a major impact. Politico notes that while nearly four out of five voters in those two states say they already know who they're voting for on Election Day, that leaves more than 20% who are still undecided—and whom the debate could influence. Before the CNN/ORC polls—conducted Sept. 20-25 among 771 likely Pennsylvania voters and 784 Colorado voters—emerged, FiveThirtyEight noted Sunday that Clinton was "tenuously" ahead in the polls, including holding onto the states she needs to win the Electoral College vote, but that "Trump is one string of good polls in Pennsylvania or Colorado or New Hampshire away from erasing that advantage."
