France Finally Wins Bread Battle

(Newser) – It's been a dozen years since France won the Baking World Cup, but the baguette's homeland took home the gold today, reports the Wall Street Journal. The drought was odd, because, as America’s coach says, “It's a French competition. And it's bread.” America has won two of the last three, but their coach said this time the French came “ready to kill."

Every three years, bakers from 12 countries converge in France for a bread-making throwdown. National pride at stake, the team had hired a new coach, who put it through an intense training regimen. Over a grueling eight hours the bakers competed in three categories: bread, yeasted pastry, and yes, bread sculpture—which they took with a scantily-clad, haute couture bread woman.
