Cubs Unveil Statue, See Error of They're Ways

(Newser) – Chicago Tribune columnist Mary Schmich didn't even have to ask: A Cubs representative greeted her with "We're going to fix it. That's all I can say." And sure enough, less than 24 hours after the unveiling of a statue honoring legendary infielder Ernie Banks, the legend on its base is as impeccable as Mr. Cub's fielding: LET'S PLAY TWO, complete with apostrophe.

Score the statue as a hit and the original inscription as an error. "It's easy to mock the missing apostrophe, but let us show some mercy," writes Schmich. "We've all been there." And as the team prepared for the 100th anniversary of its most recent World Series victory, its supporters are philosophical about typos. One fan shrugged and said, "That's the Cubs for you."

    Instant Replay on Deck for MLB Umpires and Major League Baseball officials have struck a deal that could bring instant replay to the ballpark as early as the end of this month, AP reports. The World Umpires Association signed the agreement yesterday after days of haggling over details.     Griffey Slams No. 609, Now 5th on HR List Ken Griffey Jr. slammed his 609th home run today to move into a tie with Sammy Sosa for fifth on the Major League Baseball career list. Only Barry Bonds (762), Hank Aaron (755), Babe Ruth (714), and Willie Mays (660) have hit more. Griffey's two-run drive helped his Chicago White Sox rout Seattle, 15-3. It was his first homer since Chicago acquired him from Cincinnati last  month.
