Pena Homers As Rays Rough Up Yanks 13-4

Posted Apr 4, 08 10:58 PM CDT in Sports

(Newser) – Pinch-hitter Shawn Riggans hit a three-run double, Carlos Pena a three-run homer in a seven-run eighth inning, and the Tampa Bay Rays roughed up Yankees youngster Ian Kennedy for six runs in a 13-4 win over New York. Yankees manager Joe Girardi missed his first game as New York's manager because of an upper respiratory infection, writes AP.

Bench coach Rob Thomson managed his first big league game. The Rays took advantage of Kennedy's wildness to score six times in the first three innings - five in the third - and then added seven runs in the eighth off relievers LaTroy Hawkins and Kyle Farnsworth. In all, the Rays had 15 hits off six Yankees pitchers
