A viral video out of Pakistan shows popular singer Atif Aslam halting a concert, mid-song, in order to stop a group of guys who were harassing a female concertgoer in the front row Sunday night. Per Mashable, the video shows Aslam telling the males to "act like a human being" and pulling the female fan onstage, then asking organizers to find her another seat. As translated from Urdu, Aslam also can be heard saying, "If you all want this to be a long show, act respectfully." The crowd went wild, chanting, "Atif! Atif!" He resumed the show only after trying to establish that all females in the audience were safe, notes the BBC.
The Daily Dot provides some context, noting that a rape occurs every hour in Pakistan and a gang rape every two hours, according to statistics from Human Rights Watch. And as the murder of Qandeel Baloch, known as "Pakistan's Kim Kardashian," showed last year, violence against women in general remains prevalent in the country. Baloch's own brother was arrested in that "honor killing," a move that prompted Pakistan to toughen sentences in such cases. "Some people talk about women safety While some people ensure it!!!" read one of the many tweets praising Aslam's move. (Five Pakistani girls were allegedly killed for clapping and singing.)
