Torch Protesters Climb Golden Gate Bridge

Posted Apr 7, 08 4:28 PM CDT in US Sports World    Most Covered

(newser) – With the Olympic torch due to reach San Francisco tomorrow, protesters climbed the Golden Gate Bridge today to unfurl banners reading “One World, One Dream" and "Free Tibet 08.” The climbers, members of Students for a Free Tibet, were arrested after they rappelled down the bridge’s south tower, leaving the sign aloft, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Five group members who provided support were also arrested, the San Jose Mercury News reports. Although the bridge is under constant video surveillance, the climbers managed to elude police. A rep said the student group wants to keep the torch out of Tibet on its way to China, adding that members will stage an alternate celebration tomorrow.
