This year's crop of Super Bowl ads included the usual range of funny, corny, and weird commercials—but there was no escaping 2017's political upheaval. This year's most talked about ad was 84 Lumber's ad "The Journey," which told the story of a mother and daughter making their way north from Mexico to the US, and finding a huge wall in their way. It was so controversial that Fox only allowed parts of it to air, Rolling Stone reports. A surge of visitors looking for the full ad ended up crashing the lumber company's website. In other highlights from Super Bowl ads, which cost $5 million for 30 seconds this year:

  • Immigration featured in other ads, including a Budweiser ad that told the story of co-founder Adolphus Busch's journey to America, and Google Home's multicultural ad, People reports.
  • Airbnb has made it very clear that it is strongly opposed to President Trump's travel ban and its Super Bowl ad echoed that belief, with text reading: "We believe no matter who you are, where you're from, who you love or who you worship, we all belong," though it didn't refer to the ban directly because of Fox guidelines about not using ads for "advocacy of controversial issues," the New York Times reports.
