Clark: McCain Must Get Behind Update to GI Bill

(Newser) – John McCain is "casting doubt" on his "commitment to the newest generation of American heroes” by not throwing his support behind an extension of the GI Bill, Wesley Clark writes in the Los Angeles Times. A bipartisan overhaul would fix the bill that once guaranteed veterans a paid education—but now bankrolls less than half a student’s in-state tuition.

The Republican candidate says he hasn’t had time to read it, and might not support it, but the retired general is skeptical. Clark says the bill is lingering without sufficient support, and McCain’s leadership could put it over the top. “Education assistance is not a handout,” Clark declares, “it is a sacred promise” to those who've served the country.
