Every New York City taxi cab will be an eco-friendly hybrid in five years, Mike Bloomberg declared today. And by next year all new taxis will have to meet mileage and emissions standards. Cabs will turn green as part of the mayor's wider sustainability plan for the city, which is shooting for a 30% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030.

There are only 375 hybrids in the 13,000-taxi fleet now, but that number should increase to 1,000 by the end of 2008, and grow by 20% each year after that. The standard cab now gets 14 mpg, but will have to make 30 mpg in 2009. (More taxi stories.)
