Utley's Throwing Error Gives Cubs 6-5 Win

Posted Apr 13, 08 8:11 PM CDT in Sports

(Newser) – Second baseman Chase Utley's throwing error allowed Ronny Cedeno to score the go-ahead run for the Cubs in the 10th inning to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 today. Jayson Werth and Eric Bruntlett hit solo homers for the Phillies, while Mark DeRosa had a solo shot for the Cubs. Kerry Wood (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings and Bob Howry finished for his first save.

Cedeno walked leading off the 10th against Rudy Seanez, while Geovany Soto walked after Ryan Theriot's sacrifice. Pitcher Carlos Zambrano pinch-hit for the Cubs because they were out of position players. He hit a grounder to shortstop Bruntlett that should've been an inning-ending double play. However, first baseman Ryan Howard couldn't scoop Utley's poor throw to first and Cedeno scored.
