Body Found in U.S. Uniform in Euphrates River

(Newser) – Iraqi police found the body of a man dressed in a U.S. military uniform in the Euphrates river today. A soldier from the unit that lost three soldiers earlier in the month is en route to see if he can identify the body. If the body belongs to one of the missing soldiers, his family will be notified before any public announcement is made.

The body was found in Mussayab -- about 22 miles south of Mahmoudiya, where the original attack took place that led to the disappearance of the three soldiers, in an area dubbed the Triangle of Death. Military commanders believe at least two of the soldiers are alive, and being held by an al-Quaeda affiliated group.

The five-hour standoff in Tikrit ended only when the attackers blew themselves up. American troops who were nearby as part of an advising mission with Iraqi forces responded to the attack, and some US soldiers received minor wounds, a military spokesman says. (NEWSER) - At least 50 people were killed in Iraq today when a truck bomb detonated near a crowd of worshipers leaving a Shiite mosque near Kirkuk, Reuters reports. The bombing occurred only hours after Nouri al-Maliki warned the country that terrorist violence may increase as the planned June 30 withdrawal of US troops approaches. (NEWSER) - The families of two US soldiers missing in Iraq for over a year have been informed that their bodies have been found, reports AP. Alex Jimenez, 25, and Byron Fouty, 19, were seized by insurgents in a May 2007 ambush. Four other soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division "Polar Bears" died in the attack. The body of a third kidnapped soldier was found weeks later. More»
