For McCain, Dole Better Analogy Than Ike

Posted Apr 18, 08 4:58 PM CDT in Politics

(Newser) – The war to define John McCain hasn't started—the Democrats are still working on each other—but while his advisers look to build the next Dwight Eisenhower, some say McCain may be closer to Bob Dole. John Heilemann of New York tags along as McCain, "a candidate of pronounced and glaring weaknesses," hits the road.

Mitt Romney made the Dole comparison months ago, calling McCain "the guy who’s the next in line; he’s the inevitable choice and we’ll give it to him, and then it won’t work." A onetime Dole adviser spells out other similarities, asking, "What’s John McCain’s health plan? What’s his tax plan? What’s his high-tech plan? No one in a million years can tell you."
