Europeans Cite China as Top Stability Threat

Posted Apr 15, 08 1:00 PM CDT in World    Editor's Choice

(newser) – Europeans see China as the biggest threat to world stability, a new poll says. In the wake of the Tibet crackdown, 35% of Europeans labeled China a bigger threat than any other state, reports the Financial Times. “The story of the last five years has been about economic opportunities," said one expert. "The story of the last six months has been about China as a threat in Darfur and in Tibet."

Almost one-third of US respondents also identified China as the world's greatest threat. Americans missing most-feared status can take comfort from the results from Spain, where the US beat out China as the biggest threat, 41% to 28%. In all of Europe, however, the US has lost a few percentage points since last year.
