Zambrano Lead Cubs to 12-3 Win Over Slumping Reds

Pitcher throws seven innings, has three hits

(Newser) – Derrek Lee homered, Carlos Zambrano pitched seven solid innings while helping himself with three hits and the Chicago Cubs jumped to an early lead Wednesday night in beating the Cincinnati Reds 12-3. The Cubs scored four runs in the first and six in the third to give Zambrano an early cushion on another blustery night at Wrigley Field.

Zambrano (2-1) allowed eight hits and two runs. Chicago, meanwhile, hit Josh Fogg (1-2) hard and sent the Reds and ex-Cubs manager Dusty Baker to their fifth straight loss. After Cincinnati's Adam Dunn hit a long homer in the eighth off reliever Kevin Hart, fans not only threw one ball back—as is a tradition—they littered the field with 15 baseballs, momentarily halting play.

The Veterans Committee ushered the Cubs great into the Baseball Hall of Fame today, with 15 of its 16 members giving him the nod, the Chicago Tribune reports. Santo was the only candidate up for consideration to get the requisite 12 votes for induction; Jim Kaat came in second with 10 votes, followed by Minnnie Minoso and Gil Hodges with nine each. More»

(AP) - A few minutes past midnight, the Texas Rangers had one more victory over Justin Verlander—and the Detroit Tigers lost yet another wet playoff opener started by their ace. "If anywhere in the country has a drought, just bring me in and I'll fix that," Verlander said after the Rangers beat him 3-2 last night in Game 1 of the AL championship series opener. Before the game was interrupted twice by rain for a total of 1 hour, 50 minutes in the top of the fifth inning, Nelson Cruz broke a postseason slump with a home run and the defending AL champions scored all of their runs off Verlander.
