Bullpen Keys Yanks Win Over Red Sox

Posted Apr 16, 08 11:36 PM CDT in Sports

(Newser) – The Yankees’ bullpen was able to shut down the potent Red Sox offense over the last four innings of a back-and-forth slugfest as New York beat Boston 15-9. LaTroy Hawkins earned his first victory in pinstripes after pitching two scoreless innings in relief of starter Chien-Ming Wang, who didn’t record an out in the fourth inning, reports the New York Times.

With the score knotted at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth, the Yankees’ knocked out Boston starter Clay Buchholz, taking a 7-3 advantage before the inning was over. The Red Sox struck back by scoring six runs in the top of the fifth, but their 9-7 lead was wiped away as New York scored four of their own in the inning’s bottom half.
