'Veep,' 'Big Little Lies,' 'The Handmaid's Tale' win biggest awards

And the First Emmy Goes To...

After a song, a bunch of jokes about President Trump, and even a surprise appearance by Sean Spicer during host Stephen Colbert's opening monologue, the Emmy Awards were off and running Sunday night. The first award, for best supporting actor in a drama, went to John Lithgow for The Crown. Next up:

  • Supporting actor, limited series or movie: Alexander Skarsgard, Big Little Lies
  • Writing, variety series: Last Week Tonight With John Oliver

  • Supporting actress, drama series: Ann Dowd, The Handmaid's Tale
  • Writing, comedy series: Aziz Ansari and Lena Waithe, Master of None
  • Outstanding reality competition program: The Voice
  • Director, drama series: Reed Morano, The Handmaid's Tale
  • Writing, limited series or movie: Charlie Brooker, Black Mirror
  • Director, variety series: Don Roy King, Saturday Night Live
