West Virginia trails behind all other US states when it comes to diversity, according to WalletHub. The site's ranking doesn’t simply apply to racial diversity. WalletHub gave all 50 states a "diversity score" out of 100 based on the diversity of residents' ethnicity, religion, marital status, birthplace region, occupation, language, income, and more. The most and least diverse states:

Most:

  1. California: 71
  2. Texas: 69.5
  3. Hawaii: 69
  4. New Jersey: 69
  5. New York: 68.5
Least:
  1. West Virginia: 55.5
  2. Maine: 56
  3. Vermont: 57.5
  4. New Hampshire: 59
  5. Montana: 59
