UK Psychics Foresee Trouble

Posted Apr 18, 08 2:05 PM CDT in Arts & Living World

(Newser) – Britain’s mediums are consulting their crystal balls about a new EU law that might expose them to lawsuits, the Independent reports. A group of them marched up Downing Street today to deliver a 5,000-signature petition to No. 10, hoping to convince the government not to adopt the European measure. “What we have here is a fundamental attack on our right to practice our religion,” said one spiritualist.

The EU rule would replace Britain’s 57-year-old Fraudulent Mediums Act, intended to protect “genuine” practitioners while penalizing scam artists. The medium community has hotly debated the measure, with the newer spiritualist union opposing it and the older union supporting. Mediums can avoid trouble, secular proponents note, with a disclaimer describing their acts as entertainment.
