Which US cities do best at promoting eco-friendly lifestyles? To answer that question, WalletHub looked at the 100 biggest cities in the country and compared 22 "green" indicators, ranging from greenhouse gas emissions and clean-energy policies to urban agriculture, water quality, number of commuters, and "green" job opportunities. The cities that ranked at the top:

  1. San Francisco: Total score 74.2; places first in "lifestyle and policy" category
  2. San Diego: 72.9; places seventh in "environment" category
  3. Fremont, Calif.: 72; places first in "energy sources" category
  4. Honolulu: 71.4; places first in "environment" category

  1. San Jose, Calif.: 68.9; places 10th in "environment" category
  2. Washington, DC: 68.7; places second in "lifestyle and policy" category
  3. Sacramento, Calif.: 66.3; places third in "transportation" category
  4. Irvine, Calif.: 64.9; places first in "energy sources" category
  5. Portland, Ore.: 64.4; places fourth in "transportation" category
  6. Oakland, Calif.: 63.4; places first in "energy sources" category
