Bush Sets Disapproval Record

69% of Americans give prez thumbs down—lowest in Gallup's 70 years

(Newser) – Only 28% of Americans approve of George W. Bush’s handling of the presidency, a new low for his administration, USA Today reports. In addition, his disapproval rate—69%—is the lowest in the 70-year history of the Gallup poll. Dissatisfaction over war in Iraq and the soured economy continue to pummel Dubya, whose 90% post-9/11 approval rating also set a record.

Support for Bush continues to show a partisan split:

66% of Republicans approve, 32% disapprove
91% of Democrats disapprove
23% of independents approve, 72% disapprove

Though deportations have soared under Obama, his administration has focused its crackdown efforts on employers who knowingly employ illegal immigrants; arrests from worksite raids for immigration-related offenses have dropped by 70%, the LA Times reports. Only 13% approve of the job it's doing

(NEWSER) - Virtually no one is pleased with the current Congress. In a new Gallup poll, just 13% said they approve of the job Congress is doing, compared to 83% who said they disapprove. That’s an all-time nadir, according to Politico ; previously, the lowest level was 14% in July 2008. Among Democrats, approval has fallen from 29% in November to just 16% now. Republicans are even harsher, naturally, with a mere 7% giving Congress a passing grade. More»

Democrats hope to insert it into tax-cut deal

(NEWSER) - GOP senators stopped a $7.4 billion bill to help rescuers who suffered injuries in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, the New York Times reports. The Senate voted mostly on party lines to extend debate on the 9/11 health bill, effectively sending it to be considered by the next Senate, where passage will be even more difficult. In one last-ditch effort this year, backers will try to insert provisions into the tax-cut deal brokered between the president and congressional Republicans. More»
