A 14-hour standoff has ended in Detroit, but the toll is heavy: Police say three women and the gunman are dead, and three officers shot, reports MLive. All three officers, two from the city and one from the Detroit Public Schools, were hit in the legs and will survive. The gunman has been identified as 49-year-old Lance Smith, per the Detroit News, though what sparked the initial violence Sunday night was unclear. Smith has no criminal history, but police say he may have been suffering from a mental illness.

Police responded to the house about 10:30pm Sunday after getting a call about shots fired, and Smith opened fire on officers. Smith eventually shot himself after killing his three victims—his girlfriend and two women related to her who may have gone to the house to support her during a fight, say police. One of the women was the wife of the off-duty Detroit Public Schools officer who was shot. The couple lived near the home. (More Detroit stories.)
