FDA Probes Lasik Patients' Woes

Posted Apr 25, 08 3:00 AM CDT in Science & Health Crime & Courts US

(Newser) – Patients who have experienced complications following popular Lasik eye surgery will tell their nightmare stories to a panel of the Food and Drug Administration today. The procedure to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism is coming under increasing scrutiny following reports of excessively dry eyes, and of "starbursts" and "halos" that appear in the line of vision, making it difficult to see.

"Most patients are reasonably satisfied," said an FDA spokesman. "Clearly, there is a group that is not satisfied and do not get the results they expected. What we're trying to do is figure out what that number is."
