Rebel Tamil Tigers again responsible for rush-hour attack, government claims

(Newser) – A bomb blast on a public bus killed 24 and injured 52 people today in Sri Lanka, the BBC reports. The device exploded in a vehicle full of rush-hour commuters; government officials blamed the separatist Tamil Tigers for the attack.

Bombings in Sri Lanka have become increasingly regular after the government pulled out of a truce with the Tigers in January. Today's attack hit as the military presses into rebel strongholds in the north of the island nation.

Donations were funneled to Tamil Tigers

(NEWSER) - A hedge-fund manager busted for insider trading has been contributing money to a Sri Lankan terrorist group, according to FBI agents. Raj Rajaratnam came under scrutiny in a federal probe into the Tamil Rehabilitation Organization, a charity which was charged with funneling money to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, a violent separatist group defeated by the Sri Lankan government last spring. Rajaratnam donated $2 million to TRO USA, which promptly wired the funds to Sri Lankan accounts, according to authorities. More»

Sri Lanka president earlier declared victory

(NEWSER) - Sri Lanka's rebel Tamil Tigers have declared a ceasefire after a 26-year war in a statement lamenting thousands of deaths in the past 24 hours, the BBC reports. “This battle has reached its bitter end,” said a Tamil Tigers spokesman on the group’s website. The statement later appeared slightly altered, saying the force was “prepared to silence its guns if that is what needed by the international community to save the life and dignity of the Tamil people.” More»

Gov't calls Tigers' move 'a joke,' demands a full surrender

(NEWSER) - Surrounded by government forces and citing an “unprecedented humanitarian crisis,” Sri Lanka’s Tamil Tigers declared a unilateral ceasefire today that was immediately rejected, the Guardian reports. Sri Lanka’s defense chief called the ceasefire “a joke. They were not fighting with us, they were running from us. They must surrender.” At least 2,000 people were killed in the fighting last month.
