(Newser) – An up-and-coming rapper was planning on buying a house for his family as soon as he hit it really big in the music world, but the 22-year-old never got the chance. The Clarion-Ledger reports Lonnie Taylor, aka "Lil Lonnie," who gained national fame with his 2015 song "Colors," was shot multiple times and killed in his hometown of Jackson, Miss., on Sunday night as he drove in his SUV with a female passenger. The SUV stopped moving when it crashed into a nearby home; his passenger was uninjured.

Per the Jackson Free Press, Taylor grew up in a gang-infested neighborhood, but he was determined to avoid that lifestyle. In a December interview, the aspiring performer said, "I don't do none of that" when asked about drugs, adding, "I've got morals that I stand by." He said his mother had died when he was young and that he'd been taking care of his disabled dad and trying to help out his four siblings. Jackson cops says they have no suspects so far, and no motive. (Rapper Yung Mazi was killed last year outside an Atlanta pizza place.)
