Best American Ballparks

Posted Apr 28, 08 1:36 PM CDT in Sports    Editor's Choice

(newser) – In choosing the best place to watch a ballgame, Chris De Luca decided to keep the team and city out of the discussion. With that in mind, the Chicago Sun-Times presents his list:

  1. Fenway Park: the flawed classic.
  2. Safeco Field: the high-tech home of the Mariners.
  3. Yankee Stadium: sadly, not long for this world.

  1. Kauffman Stadium: out of the way in Kansas City, but so right for baseball.
  2. PNC Park: has steel girders and view of Pittsburgh's Roberto Clemente Bridge.
  3. Dodger Stadium: devoid of odd corners.
  4. AT&T Park: where the San Francisco Giants homer into McCovey Cove.
  5. Camden Yards: the first of the modern-throwback parks.

Whether or not the Pirates win, the trip to PNC Park is worth it for the classic layout, intricate steelwork, and sweeping view of downtown Pittsburgh.   (AP Photo/Keith Srakocic)

The Mariners' Safeco Field is already a great park to spend some time in, and with potential high-tech additions it might someday surpass Fenway.   (AP Photo/John Froschauer)

Yankee Stadium may not be long for this world, which is all the more reason to catch a game there while it's still around.   (AP Photo/Seth Wenig)

It's not nestled in a bustling metropolis like Boston or New York, but Kansas City's Kauffman Stadium is a stellar example of how to build a modern ballpark.   (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel)

Fenway Park on opening day, 2008. It may be cramped and a little dirty, but it's still a must-visit example of the ultimate American ballpark.   (Flickr)
