Dark Chocolate Fends Off Pregnancy Problems

Posted Apr 29, 08 3:20 PM CDT in Science & Health

(Newser) – Pregnant women who indulge in a daily treat of dark chocolate are cutting the risk of a serious complication, according to new research. Dark chocolate, rich in the chemical theobromine, helped prevent preeclampsia, a serious condition related to high blood pressure that affects up to 8% of pregnancies, the study found.

"The darker the chocolate is, the better it is," a researcher wrote in the journal Epidemiology. "The more highly processed, the more fat and sweet it is, the less it contains theobromine."
