President Bush conceded that “it’s a very slow economy” one day ahead of possibly ugly GDP numbers, the New York Times reports, and said Congress is dragging its feet on gas prices, the mortgage crisis, farm subsidies and student loans. The Democratic-controlled legislature should be “sending me sensible and effective bills,” he said, not ones "that simply look like political statements.”

As to the price of gas, Bush said, “if there was a magic wand to wave, I’d be waving it, of course.” Democrats rebutted Bush’s claims, saying it was the White House blocking their proposals. Declared Sen. Charles Schumer, “The truth is that the president has closed his eyes and put his hands over his ears as these crises have grown.” (More George W. Bush stories.)
