Offended, Black Ministers Decry Wright's Comments

(Newser) – Jeremiah Wright's ideas don't "represent mainstream black thought on Sunday morning," black ministers and parishioners tell the Los Angeles Times—and they're worried that his recent comments are offensive and damaging to Barack Obama’s candidacy. “This didn’t have anything to do with the black church—it was basically an attack on the individual message he proclaimed, which hurt some individuals,” says one pastor.

Far from considering that the US government gave African Americans AIDS, the clergy say the black church focuses on unity and loving your neighbor. One took issue with Wright's notion that “prophetic theology” belongs only to African Americans, arguing that the vociferous style dates to the ancient prophets. Yet another grumbled about Wright’s “inflammatory” attitude, saying his substance was “lost in the rhetorical style."
