Leaked Results Show Runoff Needed in Zimbabwe

(Newser) – The opposition did indeed win last month’s presidential election in Zimbabwe, senior government sources tell Reuters, though not by enough to avoid a run-off second round. Morgan Tsvangirai won 47% of the vote to incumbent Robert Mugabe’s 43%, numbers that are in line with the claims by Mugabe's party. The country's electoral commission had no comment on the leaked stats.

Tsvangirai has said that he won the election outright (more than 50%) and that no run-off was needed; his camp has argued that Mugabe was delaying the release of the results so as to rig them. Britain, meanwhile, continues to demand an immediate release of official results, as well as a probe into post-election violence.
