(Newser) – A Michigan high school student thought up a novel way to ask for a prom date. He and 12 lacrosse teammates spelled out "Will You Go to the Prom With Me?" on their butts and mooned the girl at a match, reports the Ann Arbor News. The girl said yes—but unamused school officials have suspended the boys for inappropriate behavior.

"People get pretty creative with prom. Anyone who's done anything has been pretty outlandish," explained the nonplussed date. "I didn't think it would become this big a deal."

(NEWSER) - The pot brownies that got passed around at a Massachusetts high school's junior prom did not agree with everyone. Four students got "violently ill" at the event last week, WCVB Boston reports, causing the dance to be cut short. Police don't know exactly how the students got their hands on the marijuana-laced goodies, but say between 11 and 20 teens ate them before boarding a bus to a New Hampshire country club Friday. (NEWSER) - Starting high school classes just 30 minutes later leads to marked improvement in students' moods and even their overall health, CNN reports . Teens need 8½ to 9¼ hours of sleep a night, and biological changes associated with adolescence mean they naturally fall asleep later than younger kids. In a small sample—200 high school students—starting school at 8:30 rather than 8am lowered the number of students who described themselves as "unhappy, depressed, annoyed or irritated," says a new study. (NEWSER) - Ellen DeGeneres honored the Mississippi teen who stood up for her right to take a same-sex partner to the prom on her show today, presenting her with a $30,000 college scholarship check. DeGeneres hailed Constance McMillen as part of a new generation of leaders in gay rights. The school district canceled the prom rather than let McMillen attend. ACLU told Miss. school to let student bring girlfriend

(NEWSER) - Mississippi's Itawamba County School District has decided it would rather cancel an entire high school prom than host one where a lesbian student can wear a tuxedo and bring a female date. The district announced the prom was off after the ACLU pressured it to change its policy and allow Constance McMillen, 18, to bring her girlfriend, a fellow student, to the dance. More»
