(Newser) – Parents who schooled in same-sex dorms are surprised to hear that their kids are sharing coed college rooms, the AP reports. About two dozen schools—including Brown, Penn, and Oberlin—allow the practice, and more are following suit this year, including Stanford. Schools say coed dorm users are usually heterosexual and happen to like living with a friend of the opposite sex.

"I had just roomed with a boy. I was under the impression at the time that girls were a little bit neater and more quiet," said one male student who shares a room with a female friend.  "As it turns out, I don't see much of a difference from one sex to the other."

Coed dorms/hallways/rooms are all very well in theory, but very stupid in practice. The practice almost ruined my life in 1987 - they started coed dorms but never told women they had the right to say no, so I was treated like dirt and called repressed because I dared to say no to a spoiled brat who saw college as an opportunity to bonk everything female. I'm not going to send my daughter to a college that has coed dorms.
