Barack Bounces Back From Pastor Flap

Posted May 5, 08 3:58 AM CDT in Politics    Most Covered

(newser) – Barack Obama appears to be recovering—mostly—from the furor over his former pastor's incendiary remarks, according to the latest CBS News/New York Times poll. His lead over Hillary Clinton has increased from 8 points to 12 points—50% to 38%—among Democratic primary voters, who also approve of how he handled the flap over comments by Rev. Jeremiah Wright, 68% to 22%. There's still some negative residue, however.

While 60% now say that Obama shares the values of most Americans, that's down from 70% a month ago—a drop attributed to Wright's remarks, which Obama denounced last week. But Obama now leads John McCain 51% to 40%, compared to a dead heat in the same poll last week. Clinton leads McCain by 12%. Clinton and Obama are tied among all Democrats, as opposed to the 12-point gap among Democrats who have voted or plan to vote in a primary.
