The son and daughter of the allegedly anti-Semitic candidate who somehow won the Republican primary for a seat in Missouri's House of Representatives both reached out to the Kansas City Star this week to encourage residents of House District 15 not to vote for their father. "My dad’s a fanatic. He must be stopped," says Andy West. "His ideology is pure hatred. It’s totally insane." Adds Emily West, "I can’t imagine him being in any level of government." Steve West, 64, is known for a radio show and website that have espoused anti-Semitic, Islamophobic, racist, and homophobic views. "If he gets elected, it would legitimize him. Then he would become a state official, and he’s saying that Jews shouldn’t even have civil rights," Andy West, the middle of three West children, says.

Both he and his sister were concerned to drive through the Clay County House district recently and see lots of support for their father. "You see his signs everywhere," Emily West says. "I don’t understand how people can put out his signs knowing the comments that he’s made." But Steve West spoke to multiple outlets including USA Today and NBC News to insist he's not racist or anti-Semitic and that some of his previous comments have been taken out of context, though he did also air some grievances with Israel, Islam, and Jewish people. He blames a contentious divorce for the rift between him and his children and says his ex-wife "poisoned" them against him. (Two similar stories: Another GOP candidate sent out an allegedly anti-Semitic mailer, and six siblings came together to encourage voters to vote against their brother.)
