Jeter, Politely, Nudges Yankees Legends Aside

Posted May 7, 08 1:16 PM CDT in Sports

(Newser) – When Derek Jeter passed Joe DiMaggio on the Yankees' all-time hits list earlier this season, he didn’t even notice. “I had no idea,” the captain tells the New York Post. “Somebody said something to me because I didn't see it flash on the scoreboard.” Jeter, 33, will likely pass Mickey Mantle and Babe Ruth this season, too—but will he notice?

“It’s not like I run to the Stadium and say ‘If I can do this …’” says the shortstop, who enters tonight's game with 2,392 career hits—so it’s possible Jeter doesn’t know he’s 23 hits from Mickey Mantle's total and 329 behind leader Lou Gehrig. “They played for such a long time," he said. "In my mind, I still haven’t played that long.”
