Feeling secure is often a top priority when people are seeking a place to settle down—and that doesn't just mean finding locales with boring weekly police logs. WalletHub looked at more than three dozen safety metrics for 180 cities, examining what automatically comes to mind when you think of safety—including crimes such as mass shootings, terrorist attacks, and sexual assaults—as well as markers of financial security (e.g., unemployment and foreclosure rates, bankruptcy filings) and the risk of natural disasters in each location. Read on for the top 10:

  1. Columbia, Md.
  2. South Burlington, Vt.
  3. Plano, Texas (No. 1 in the "Home and Community Safety" category)
  4. Virginia Beach, Va.
  5. Warwick, RI
  6. Gilbert, Ariz.
  7. Yonkers, NY
  8. Bismarck, ND
  9. Nashua, NH
  10. Boise, Idaho (No. 1 in the "Financial Safety" category)
See how other cities fared here, including Dover, Del., which did the best in the "Natural-Disaster Risk" category. (Here are the most fun cities in America.)
