A 71-year-old Massachusetts man is recovering from a stroke he suffered while driving on a major highway, and a doctor says he has his 12-year-old grandson to thank. Benjamin Bubis, a seventh-grader from Canton, was on his way to soccer practice on Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 495 when his grandfather, Boris Hutorin, suddenly stopped talking, the AP reports. Benjamin says he knew something was wrong, so he grabbed the steering wheel to avoid crashing and guided the car to the side of the highway while simultaneously calling his mom first, then 911, per the Telegram & Gazette. "I continued driving and I pulled up onto, like, an alley on the right side of the highway," Benjamin says. "And I tried to stop the car. So I clicked all the buttons. I stopped it after seven minutes of driving."
He adds that he was "a little scared, but I knew I had to control myself and figure out what I [had] to do." Benjamin says that, before Tuesday, he'd never driven a car before. An ambulance arrived to take Hutorin to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, where he was treated by Dr. Ajit Puri. "It was a major stroke that he was developing at the time he came to us," Puri says. "And not treated [quickly] ... he would have had a massive stroke." Puri, who notes Hutorin can now move the right side of his body and has his speech nearly back to normal, says Benjamin is "absolutely a hero," a label WCVB says was assigned for "good reason." Benjamin's mother (and Hutorin's daughter) feels the same. "I am so proud of him and I am overwhelmed with joy that everything worked out," Yelena Bubis says of her son.
