Battles Rage On as Army Hunts Down Hezbollah

Posted May 11, 08 6:30 PM CDT in World    Most Covered

(newser) – Fighting raged on in Lebanon today after Hezbollah pulled out of West Beirut and faced army troops in the north and Druze mountains, AFP reports. One woman died and five were wounded in Tripoli, while, near Beirut, the Druze majority leader urged Hezbollah to surrender. "Civil peace and halting the destruction are paramount," he said, before the army rolled in.

Meanwhile, US-friendly Arab envoys led by Egypt clashed with other regional leaders at a crisis meeting in Cairo. At issue was a resolution criticizing Hezbollah and rejecting "the use of armed violence to achieve political goals." Syria ducked today's talks but spoke through its state newspaper, saying that Hezbollah's Beirut attack thwarted a US plan to capture Lebanon.
