It would not be all that surprising if you, dear reader, live in a town called Franklin. There are 30 of them in the US, making it the most common town name across the country. (All of them a tribute to founding father Benjamin Franklin.) As 24/7 Wall St. explains, about two-thirds of city, town, municipality, borough, village, and census-designated place names in the US are unique (more than 15,500 names in total); the other third, or about 3,800 names, are shared. The most common ones after Franklin, plus how many of them there are:

  1. Fairview, 28
  2. Clinton, 27
  3. Madison, 23
  4. Greenville, 23
  5. Marion, 23
  6. Salem, 22
  7. Arlington, 21

  9. Springfield, 20
  10. Manchester, 20
  11. Milton, 20
  12. Clayton, 20
Read on for more about the country's least common names.

24/7 Wall St. also compiled a list of some of the least common and most unconventional names. Here are the names it chose as the top 10; obviously, each of them only appears once in the US:

  2. Braintree Town, Massachusetts
  3. Cut and Shoot, Texas
  4. Chowchilla, California
  5. What Cheer, Iowa
