Country singer Justin Carter was killed in an accidental shooting just as his career was starting to take off. The 35-year-old died after a gun being used as a prop in a music video went off, according to Mark Atherton at Triple Threat Management. The gun "went off and caught my son in the corner of his eye," mother Cindy McClellan tells Fox. She says her son had the gun in his pocket while filming the video in his Houston apartment Saturday. "He just loved music, he was very gifted, and by God, his voice was spectacular," she says.

Carter had recently signed a deal with Triple Threat and was about to embark on a 10-state tour, his mother says. "Justin had a potential to, you know, in our eyes, and a lot of people's eyes, to be the next Garth Brooks," Atherton tells ABC7. He says his client was "kind of like the class clown, but when it was time to get down to business, he got down to it." Carter, a US Army veteran, had two daughters and Atherton says the company plans to release the rest of his music, with the proceeds going to his family. Variety reports that in the week before his death, Carter released a single, "Love Affair," which was one of four videos posted on his YouTube channel. (More country music stories.)
