Washington's Big Question: Where's the Mueller Report?

The buzz in Washington is that Robert Mueller's report is imminent, but whether that means hours, days, or weeks remains very much unclear. President Trump himself said Friday he doesn't know when Mueller will submit the results of his investigation to Attorney General William Barr. "I have no idea," he told reporters at the White House, per NBC News. "We're going to see what happens, it's going to be very interesting ... there was no collusion, there was no obstruction—everybody knows it. It's all a big hoax."

  • Fox interview: Trump also spoke with Maria Bartiromo of Fox Business News and again criticized the investigation. "It's always interesting to me because a deputy, that didn't get any votes, appoints a man that didn't get any votes, he's going to write a report on me," he said, referring to Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein and Mueller. Trump spoke of his election victory and wondered how it came to be that Mueller is going "to make a determination on my presidency," per CNN. "People will not stand for it."

  • Giuliani's analogy: Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani also says he has no idea when the report is out. "It's like waiting for a baby," he tells the Washington Post. He promised to hand out cigars "if the report is good," meaning it finds that Trump did nothing wrong.
  • A 'dud'? "Several top Democratic lawmakers and aides tell us privately that they are certain the report will be a dud," says a Politico Playbook post. The White House would then surely call for Democrats in the House to end their separate investigations, but that won't happen, no matter what Mueller finds, according to the post.
  • Making it public: The attorney general must notify Congress about Mueller's general findings, but he is not required to make the report public or even to make a "comprehensive" report to lawmakers, notes NBC. The president has said he's fine with it being made available, however, which could raise the pressure on Barr to release it.
(Clues are adding up that the report is coming out soon.)
