On the Ropes, GOP Fights Hard in Miss. Congress Race

Posted May 13, 08 2:44 PM CDT in Politics

(Newser) – On a losing streak in special elections, the GOP is pouring money and star power into the 1st District of Mississippi, which votes today, The Hill reports. Greg Davis has drawn support from the cash-strapped NRCC and visits from Dick Cheney and Mike Huckabee in his effort to beat out Travis Childers for the seat Roger Wicker vacated when he replaced Trent Lott in the Senate.

“If they can’t win here, it doesn’t look well for the Republicans,” said an Ole Miss professor. “They can’t even blame it on Bush, I don’t think. For whatever reason, the Republican message just isn’t as strong this year.”
