Remy Ma Sentenced to 8 Years for Assault

Posted May 14, 08 11:33 AM CDT in Crime & Courts Gossip

(Newser) – Rapper Remy Ma was sentenced to eight years in prison yesterday, following her conviction on two counts of assault for shooting her friend in the stomach. The self-proclaimed "Queen of New York" broke down in tears at the sentencing, which was somewhat more lenient than expected, reports MTV. The judge may have been swayed by an emotional statement Ma made, in which she apologized to her victim.

Ma—real name Reminisce Smith—had made a name for herself as one of New York's most successful female rappers before an altercation over money brought her career to a halt. Attending the sentencing was Ma's fiancé, rapper Papoose. The pair were scheduled to marry at Rikers Island Monday, but the wedding was canceled after jailers became suspicious of a skeleton key he had.
