Sorenstam to Retire After 2008 Season

(Newser) – Annika Sorenstam has announced her retirement from professional golf, effective at the end of the 2008 season, Golf.com reports. The eight-time LPGA player of the year has "other priorities," including starting a family and working to build "the Annika brand of businesses, including my academy, my foundation, and my golf course design projects."

The golf icon's goal in her final 7 months "is to win tournaments, to win majors." Retrieving the top ranking from Lorena Ochoa and besting Kathy Whitworth's record of 88 LPGA wins aren't on Sorenstam's agenda, she says. Sorenstam has won more than $22 million, 72 LPGA events, 10 majors, and 16 international tournaments, adds Golf.com.
