Scottish Soccer Fans Riot After Loss

Posted May 15, 08 3:02 PM CDT in World Sports

(Newser) – Fans of a Scottish soccer team rampaged in Manchester, England, last night, attacking the police and civilians after their team lost in the final of a European championship match played there. One fan of the winning Russian team was stabbed, the Times of London reports; police noted 52 assaults, and more than a dozen officers were treated for injuries.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who has been lobbying to bring the World Cup to England in 2018, called the scenes in Manchester a "disgrace" and said he was "disgusted to see people misbehaving." The European soccer association is now opening an investigation into the violence, which could result in a financial penalty against the Glasgow Rangers club.
