A 17-year-old girl who calls herself "an unwavering advocate for the marine life and the animals who live in the water" was attacked by a shark at North Carolina's Atlantic Beach Sunday. Paige Winter suffered "deep lacerations to her leg, pelvic and hand areas," per fire department officials, but on Sunday night, the medical center treating her said she was in good condition, WCTI reports. A GoFundMe campaign set up for Winter says "amputation of the left leg above the knee was inevitable," but that has not been verified. The center's statement also notes that Winter "wishes for people to continue to respect sharks in their environment and their safety," and the GoFundMe campaign ends with this line: "She wants everyone to know that sharks are still good people."
